In its three years of commercial operation, Utopian Slumps has achieved significant critical acclaim and gained a reputation as one of Australia’s pre-eminent young commercial spaces. Beginning with a stable of nine, the gallery now represents sixteen early-to-mid-career Australian and New Zealand artists who specialise in emerging and experimental art forms spanning conceptual painting to video and installation.

Utopian Slumps is renowned for its focus on curatorial practice, often inviting guest curators to stage exhibitions, collaborating with key local curators, and curating noteworthy Australian and international artists into its exhibition program.

Utopian Slumps’ Founding Director Melissa Loughnan has also given guest lectures at various arts and curatorial symposia arranged by the University of Melbourne, Craft Victoria, Museums Australia, Auckland Art Fair, the Public Galleries Association of Victoria and the National Gallery of Victoria.

In addition to its curatorial focus, Utopian Slumps maintains an emphasis on producing critical writing and publications to accompany and support its exhibitions and artists. The gallery recently published a retrospective book, Utopian Slumps: The Collingwood Years, documenting its earlier three years (2007 - 09) as a non-profit curator-run space, including essays on local strands of site-responsive installation and the state of independent art spaces in Melbourne. The book brought together a number of different academic and non-academic voices, as well as artist pages from several artists who exhibited in the early stages of their careers and have now come to prominence.

Utopian Slumps’ reputation in the contemporary art landscape is demonstrated through its artists’ inclusion in institutional collections and exhibitions in Australia as well as international biennials, including Lauren Berkowitz’s recent inclusion in the 2010 Aichi Triennial Curatorial Competition and Dylan Martorell’s participation in the 2011 Jakarta Biennial and Kochi Muziris Biennale, India, 2012-13.Director: Melissa LoughnanActing Gallery Manager: Brooke BabingtonMarketing Intern: Charlotte CornishGallery Interns: Oskar Slifierz, Giselle Laming
